(What If)…”APPLE” Marine Electronics

Recently on TWITTER, I posed the question about “what if” APPLE were to enter the Marine Electronics industry. Just a random thought after realizing how far I’ve come personally with APPLE products (#iminlove), and the gap left wide open by today’s electronics manufacturers.

TWITTER discussion @JasonBaggett

Please don’t get me wrong, I am in NO WAY, bashing Lowrance, Humminbird, Garmin, NAVICO, or Fishing Hot Spots. They each have their following, and some great elements that make them who they are respectfully. Buy, what if…….

If Apple were to enter the Marine Electronic/Sonar/Side Imaging/Structure Scanning (taking a deep breathe now) industry, we could:

  • download maps, data from iTunes (plug for FishWrench, since this was his idea)
  • use MobileMe to share/store data
  • find our stuff when stolen (GPS feature enabled of course)
  • Sync data from iPhone, iPad, or iMac
  • ……You get the idea?

Sure, APPLE  would have a steep hill to climb as far as a learning curve and entry to market, but just think of the possibilities!

If APPLE was in the R&D stages of a consumer marine electronic, what would you want it to do?

Just to be clear, I was being factious when implying maps could only be downloaded from iTunes. I was trying to express that Apple ties the hands of it’s users. :)

Rebuttle to come soon at Fishwrench.com.

Jason, I like the idea, but there’s alot of us who HATE Apple stuff for how they do business. I know your “thinking out of the box” and I think it’s probably an idea with great merit, but we will never see this happen. Keep up the good work on the site.
Fyi, I bought (2) ETHOS after reading your BLOG. Thanks, I love it.

@Jones: I totally understand, but I’m an APPLE convert, slowly but surely. Thanks for the positive comments.
Concerning the ETHOS, keep me updated, and thats AWESOME!
      Thanks Jones!

Your an idiot. There’s a reason why those geeks havent entered into this industry. Lowrance, Hummingbird, and Garmin are the cornerstones to the Marine Electroncis and APPLE would be devoured.

Outdoor Rep, that’s not cool man. Jason is merely stating an idea that has alot of potential, not that it would ever happen, but it’s an openly expressed idea. BTW, who do you rep for?
Jason is a good guy, who stands tall in his #Faith, loves his #Family, & has a deep passion for the #Outdoors. He’s not just trying to make a buck from advertising, or plugging products thats junk.
Before you start calling any one names, I urge you to speak with Jason.
I pray you find this positively.

@Outdoor Rep: I repsect your opinion, but name calling? C’mon dude!… Seriously? It’s just an idea, and I wasn’t taking aim at Lowrance (I want an HDS REALY-REALY BAD), Humminbird, Garmin, or anyone. It was just an idea. Most site owners censor comments before publishing; I do not. The reason, your entitled to your thoughts, and opinions as long as it doesn’t cross the line. Why don’t you tell me this reason, in a postive manner, and we can discuss. Thanks.

I’m a Lowrance guy, and have always wondered if there would be another player in this game. Same goes for Trolling Motors, only MInn Kota and MotorGuide. Maybe Toyota should come out with a TM (In joking)
As for the Outdoor Rep dude, take your name calling somewhere else.
To Jason, keep being who you are, and what your doing with this site.

Don’t bother with Outdoor Rep dude. Love the haters with prayer!
Thanks for the positive thoughts and comments!

I’d like to see what the mapping and sonar would look like. I’m sure it would have the Apple look and feel as well as potentially launching new apps.

Hi Jason, I understand your point. I also understand competition is good for both the consumer and manfacturer, but do you really think Apple could provide anglers with the best marine functionality as does Lowrance, Humminbird, or even Garmin.
It would seem more logical for Apple to buy an existing company and rebrand the product, instead of jumping into an industry that they have no previous history with.
I wouldn’t trade my HDS units for anything. Thanks.

@Lowrance Pro: I don’t think they could compete initially, but long run, very possibly. The point is multifunction platforms with ease of access for guys like me who don’t want to buy this, and that, and this cord, and etc. just for data sake.
I want a Lowrance HDS so bad, but I’m happy to have what I have (no mapping, no contours, just simple depth and sonar). It’s just an idea spawned from neccesity, not hatred.
Your perfectly right with the buying of a company to leap forward into the industry. Several have done it, and proved effective.
“I wouldn’t trade my HDS units for anything.” < — LUCKY DOG! :)
Thanks for the commment and come back often.

Hey Jason. Why don’t you have a new fancy electronics like the HDS or Humminbird? I’d think anyone who fishes the Opens as you do would be a have to have piece of equipment.
Not poking fun at you, just curious.
      Like the apple idea.

@Fish Finder: thanks for stopping by. I have older units, and would LOVE to have newer ones for many reasons. 1) Cost, 2) Cost, and 3) Cost. I can’t afford to go by what I want so I’m saving every dime I can, just for some new HDS units (bow & console).
        Thanks! Jason

I love when people call other people idiots with big typos in their post. That’s always the pot calling the kettle something or other to me. It’s you’re for the uneducated, as in you are an idiot if you tell someone “your an idiot.”

Good post and it did what it was supposed to. Spur conversation among anglers. Nevermind the haters. Life is too short to worry with shallow minded folks.

    Keep blogging.
